By now, the majority of us realise that having a poor diet and lifestyle is directly related to our overall health. In many ways, healthy eating has become somewhat trendy as people are starting to understand that they do indeed have control over their own health and are ready to take responsibility for their lives.
Unfortunately, there are still a large number of people who generally ‘feel fine,’ and thus don’t realize the damage they actually may be causing to their bodies. Luckily, the human body is an amazing organism that, if given the right environment is perfectly capable of healing itself.
Our organs are designed to help us filter out all of the crap that we put into our bodies and keep us healthy, but some of the foods that we are eating can actually cause damage over a period of time if we aren’t careful. There are some foods that can help to protect us and to heal our bodies instead of tearing them down, however.
The Organ That Takes The Brunt Of Our Unhealthy Decisions
Now, this may come as a shock to you, as it did for me, but the brain is the organ that suffers most from an unhealthy diet. I was thinking liver, as it tends to be the star in terms of filtering out chemicals and toxins we ingest and from many of the unhealthy decisions we are making, but the brain actually suffers quite a bit from our unhealthy decisions and needs optimal food and nutrition to function at its highest capacity.
The way the brain is designed, it’s ability to perform tasks, and virtually every other aspect of the brain is in need of proper food. The foods we eat are broken down into nutrients, which are then taken up into the bloodstream and carried directly to the brain. Once they reach the brain, they are able to replenish depleted storage, activate cellular reactions, and then they become the very fabric of our brains, the brain matter.
It’s amazing how little attention this very fact receives, when we think about being healthy, often it is related to our outward physical appearance, or just in general not being sick, but what about our brain health? Shouldn’t this be a main concern when it comes to health? We put so much emphasis on anti-aging, looking young, getting that perfect beach bod, having supple, dewy looking skin, being flexible, toned, glowing etc. But what about our brains?

There is no denying that when we eat a fatty, sugary, or heavy meal we experience symptoms such as sluggishness, brain fog and drowsiness, but you may be surprised to know that these symptoms originate in the brain, not in the stomach like you may have thought. If you have ever done any type of fast, juice cleanse, or fruit fast you may recall the feeling of absolute clarity in your mind, this is always the first thing that stands out for me wile undertaking this method of cleansing. The mind becomes very clear and sharp because it isn’t being bombarded with tons of chemicals and stimulants.
What You Can Do To Optimize Your Brain Health

Our brains are made up of 80 percent water and can become dehydrated quite quickly. If you aren’t eating a diet that is rich in fresh fruits and veggies than this is something that you should be especially mindful of, no pun intended. Be sure to drink clean water, ideally from a spring to ensure there are no chemical additives and that it contains essential minerals to optimize your health.
Load Up On Seeds & Nuts
Chia seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, brazil nuts, and sunflower seeds are all great to boost your brain health. Most of these contain essential omega 3 fatty acids, which are essential for your brain. Chia, flax and sunflower seeds can easily be added to smoothies, sprinkled on salads, or as a topping on avocado toast. The nuts can be eaten as is, but to maximize their potential benefits you may want to consider activating them. Nuts can be eaten as is, but can also be easily turned into a non-dairy alternative to milk. The possibilities are truly endless.

According to MD and author, Ann Kulze, “I don’t think avocado gets it’s due, the monounsaturated fat contributes to healthy blood flow and healthy blood flow means healthy brain.” She also claims that avocados can lower blood pressure. Consider adding ¼ to ½ of an avocado as a side to a meal daily, or smother it on some toast!
Often referred to as brainberries, these sweet little juicy gems can help protect the brain from oxidative stress, which can reduce the effects of age-related brain conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Studies have also shown that a diet that is rich in blueberries significantly improved the learning capacity and motor skills of aging rats, making them mentally equivalent to younger rats. Ann Kulze recommends at least one cup of wild blueberries a day, fresh, frozen or freeze-dried.
